What's In My 10+ Hour Flight Carry On Bag?

The process of me actually getting to Manila is pretty crazy. Want to hear my itinerary?
On September 7th, I am leaving Salt Lake City at 7:15 in the morning. By the time I reach Manila, it will be September 9th at midnight... I'll be flying for 2 days straight. Oy vey.

Luckily, I'm the kind of person that likes everything to be organized and planned out! I've done plenty of research on what other people bring on their flights and have combined multiple ideas in this post!
Here's a solid list of things you can bring on a 10+ hour flight...

TECHNOLOGY + ESSENTIALS
If you are like me, you'll feel more safe with your valuable things packed with you on the plane instead of in your checked bag; especially when things cost you two paycheck to buy. I will more than likely have all of my gadgets and gizmos with me close at hand on the plane. There's also the obvious things that are very important that you'll want on an easy access pocket. Make sure that you have...
  • Wallet - (with cash, debit and credit card, drivers license)
  • Important Travel Information - Plane tickets, itinerary, etc...
  • Passport and VISA
  • iPhone + Charger
  • Laptop + Charger
  • Tablet + Charger
  • Camera + Charger + SD Cards
  • Headphones

FOR COMFORT + SLEEP
For flights that last longer than 10 hours, sleep is going to be your best friend. You may be wondering how are you going to be able to sleep on a plane? What if there is a baby crying or a kid playing super smash brothers? Have no fear. I've got some great ideas to get you more comfortable and help you catch some sleep on your flight. Try packing...
  • Scarf (big enough to use as pillow/blanket)
  • Cozy socks (planes are often cold and drafty)
  • Eye Mask (optional/block out any lights)
  • Ear Plugs (block out most of the sound)
  • Head Pillow (mine is inflatable with a fleece lining)

HYGIENE + TOILETRIES
Before you board your plane, you'll want to double check your airline rules and make sure that you understand the fluid ounces limit. It's smart to read through them and understand the rules and regulations, it's common sense really! As a rule of thumb, remember the 3-1-1 rule. 3 ounces or less per product, fit it all in 1 quart sized zip loc bag, and 1 per person (source). Since I'll have a layover in China, I'll have a little bit of time to freshen up before I leave for my last flight to Manila. You don't need to bring you're entire bathroom, you don't even need to bring make up. You really only need...
  • Travel deodorant + travel perfume
  • Travel baby powder (use to dry up an oily scalp)
  • Contact case + contact fluid (in case I want to take my contacts out to sleep)
  • Glasses case + glasses
  • Glasses cleaning kit
  • Small mirror
  • Eye drops
  • Tissues
  • Hair elastic + hair claw
  • Travel hand sanitizer + travel hand lotion
  • Travel face wipes (to clear your face of dirt, oil and old make up)
  • 3 Make up Items (foundation/concealer, mascara, and a tinted chap stick)
  • Travel toothbrush + travel toothpaste + travel floss
  • Daily prescription medication + pain killer + sleep aid

MISCELLANEOUS
You can't get through an entire flight without some form of entertainment, right? Sometimes I get sick of looking at a screen, clicking and scrolling for far too long. Bring some tangible entertainment that can keep you occupied. I'm personally a kid at heart, I've got no shame bringing a coloring book with me on the flight. You could bring something like...
  • Reading material (magazine or book)
  • Journal or Notebook (or if you're me, both)
  • Pens + colored pencils + pencil sharpener
  • Snacks (actually have to be 3.4 oz or less)
  • Mints/gum
  • Sunglasses (optional)
  • Deck of cards
  • Tide-to-go pen (optional, just something I thought of)

And there you have it. You're all set for your carry on bag!
Hope you enjoyed reading this post.

  3. If you're like me and like to keep your hands busy, think about bringing along some kind of crafty thing. I crochet so I check the current regulations about what kind of crochet hooks are acceptable (generally any of them--knitting needles are more problematic) and what about scissors (last I checked, blunt ended ones were fine) and a project that takes lots and lots of time with very skinny yarn to keep down the size. I also use a Kindle and download audio books from my library, plug in either noise cancelling headphones or just a little earbud and crochet my way through the friendly skies. I prefer to work on projects that require very little thought. Some of my favorites are baby items with very thin yarn, slippers (I even made a pair that I ended up wearing when I got cold towards the end of the flight), a lacy scarf out of spider web yarn, and a few market bags out of thin but strong acrylic yarn. I once gave one of them to a seatmate. She was so happy. Isn't it fun making people happy? Safe travels.

  4. One more thing--on a 10+ hour flight you might want to bring along an extra pair of undies and a tiny packet of wet wipes. I'd probably wear an old pair that I could just toss and have nicer ones to wear on my arrival at my destination.

  5. The 311 rule is one litre not one gallon...

  6. I always carry Lysol wipes. Unfortunately, the tray tables are one of the biggest sources of germs on the plane. I also always pack my electricity adapters/converters in my carry-on. The chargers are no good in foreign countries without the appropriate electricity adapter/converter - found that out the hard way. ;)

  7. I love this post! Didn't even think about bringing toiletries on the flight... not a frequent traveler obviously. Wish there were a printable list of this! Thanks for the great tips!
