My Traveling Diaries | My First Trip to Mexico

In honor of not a lot of traveling going on, I decided to write about a week long trip I took with my in laws to Mexico last year! It was my first time and I was not disappointed. We traveled to neighboring cities to see landmarks and beautiful Mayan ruins. I learned a lot about Mayan culture and their philosophy on life. Mexico is a true place of beauty, food, music and dance; I honestly felt peaceful and at home.

We stayed at a resort called the Royal Haciendas in Playa. It was a beautiful resort with gorgeous grounds and a lot of entertainment. The employees were very kind and hospitable and kept everyone entertained, well fed and hydrated with fresh cold beer.

During the week we traveled to multiple Mayan ruins. One of the first places we went was Tulum. Tulum is the only Maya settlement that borders the sea. It sits a a top a cliff that is about 39 feet tall with cascading waves crashing below. We trekked along the sandy walkways and snapped photos of the different sites reading the history about each one.

On another day we went to the cenote called Jardin del Edin. Cenotes are freshwater sinkholes and were considered sacred to Mayans. This cenote in particular was a pocket of paradise hidden away in the vast coverings of forest and vegetation. The water was so clear and blue with thousands of little fishes swimming along the sunken rocks. We snagged our snorkle gear, dived to the deep and plunged our bodies off a ledge into the cenote for a few hours.

Chichen Itza was next on the destination list! Since it's considered one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, we woke up early in the morning on the day of the trip. We met a kick ass guide that answered all of our questions and gave us a lot of insight into the life of a Mayan. Since she herself has Mayan ancestors, she had countless stories and knowledge about the wonders of this ancient civilization.

We couldn't leave Mexico without climbing the only ruin that people are allowed to climb! Coba has ruins that offer visitors a great experience of wandering on the same rock that the Mayans did. The climb to the top of the temple is well worth the view!

Thanks for Reading
Love, Nick
